FAQs (details might be subject to change)

WHEN CAN STUDENTS ENROLL?

We are planning to open in January 2021. Applications will be available soon and we will enroll students year round. You can contact us today to schedule an conversation and/or a tour. See our Admissions page.

WHAT ARE THE ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS?

The school will be open from 8am to 4pm, Monday through Friday. Students have to arrive by 10am and not leave before 2pm, and need to be present for a minimum of five hours a day.

DOES THE SCHOOL PROVIDE MEALS?

No, students will need to bring their own lunches and snacks. A kitchen will be available for students to prepare their own meals. Certification is required for students to use kitchen equipment. Our open campus policy will allow older students to go to nearby restaurants and shops. Ordering food is also an option.

IS TRANSPORTATION PROVIDED?

No, the school will not provide transportation. Families may want to make carpooling arrangement. There are also several bus lines that run through the Plaza where the school is located.

DO YOU ACCEPT STUDENTS WITH LEARNING DIFFERENCES?

Students need to be able to function independently, take care of their basic needs, and be safe without constant adult supervision. Other Sudbury schools' experience is that many students previously diagnosed with a learning difference can seamlessly thrive in the school, provided that they have chosen to be there and their family trusts them to be in charge of their own education.

WHAT ABOUT SCREEN TIME?

The school will not impose any restriction on screen time. Students are allowed to use computers of any shape and size as they please. However, everyone takes online safety very seriously. Students and staff will be continuously working hand in hand to keep the online safety rules up to date with the ever-evolving usages of technology.

WHAT ABOUT HOMEWORK?

There is no homework. KC Sudbury School does not impose any curricular activity on students. However, students in other Sudbury schools have been found to carry their own projects back and forth between home and school.

WHAT ABOUT TESTING?

There are no standardized tests. Everyone is responsible for evaluating themselves.

HOW DO STUDENTS GRADUATE? DO STUDENTS RECEIVE A HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA?

Yes, we will grant high school diplomas. Students who have attended KC Sudbury School for at least three years will have to successfully defend the thesis that "their experiences while enrolled at KC Sudbury School have enabled them to develop the problem-solving skills, adaptability, and the abilities needed to function independently and responsibly in the world they are about to enter."

WHAT AGE CAN ATTEND THE SCHOOL?

Our students will range from 4 to 18 years old. Young children need to be able to be responsible for their basic needs and demonstrate that they can be safe without the constant supervision of adults.

WHAT IS SELF-DIRECTED LEARNING? WHAT DO STUDENTS DO ALL DAY?

Children are born curious and learn through play. They can choose their own activities. Students can ask for help learning about various topics, whether on their own or with someone else (an adult or another student). They can organize and ask to start classes and bring in experts as needed.
